Graphische Gesellschaft Postcards
Final Comments on GG and some cards
Illustrated are a couple of cards and designs printed by Graphische Gesellschaft, Berlin. Most show their name, a few others seen here are of 100% identical layout as the printing sample cards of GG I have. It is clear that there must be many, many more cards printed by GG around. Likely also from countries not shown here. Especially post-1905 card issues which tend to show a number of different (address side) layouts.
Interesting to know is also the role C.H. Oscar Lange from Berlin-Schoeneberg played. He did run two own companies, both had to do with postcards. But he was also one of the early shareholders of Graphische Gesellschaft A.G. In TPA issue 35 is an article that reveals that Oscar Lange worked also as "jobber" for GG, means he secured postcard printing orders. Had his own printing sample/promotion postcards including fold-out panorama views.
Illustrated samples include typical collotype (monochrome/duochrome) printed views, some hand-coloured. Early coloured halftone printed views from turn of century which are not of overwhelming quality. A view of a Chinese Temple dated 1898 published by Reinicke & Rubin, Magdeburg. It reads photo taken by GG, perhaps by Dr. E. Mertens who was sometimes credited being a photographer. Anyway, it was clearly printed by GG. Also a gravure printed card with aerial view of a monument. GG used gravure printing since the early 1920‘s. My only sample of this new GG printing process was mailed in 1924. Recently an earlier real photo card from Italy turned up with GG mentioned as publisher.
I guess there is still much waiting to be discovered regarding GG.
